Associate/Full Professor – DEPUTY PHYSICIAN-IN-CHIEF – FACULTY DEVELOPMENT FOR CLINICIAN TEACHERS AND EDUCATORS

Applications are invited for the position of Deputy Physician-In-Chief Faculty Development for Clinician Teachers and Educators, Department of Medicine, at the University Health Network and Sinai Health System. 

This is a hospital based leadership role within the UHN and SHS Department of Medicine and the successful candidate must be eligible for appointment at the rank of Associate / Full Professor as a Clinician Teacher or Clinician Educator in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto, and a Department of Medicine physician appointment at SHS/UHN.  This Deputy Physician in Chief position is for a 5-year term, renewable once following a successful review. The successful applicant will work closely with the Deputy Physician-In-Chief Education on several complementary portfolios.  They will be responsible for providing effective leadership, mentorship, and development of junior to mid-career faculty (post CFAR through Associate Professor Promotion) for Clinician Teachers and Educators in the UHN and SHS Department of Medicine.  They are also expected to develop and lead a program to focus on academic development, leadership, recruitment, retention and renewal of Clinician Teachers and Educations as early to mid-career faculty.  They will also lead work on re-evaluating, evolving, defining and advocating how scholarship is measured for CTs and CEs, and in turn, how they are valued, supporting career development and University Promotion.  They will provide input into Care Model Transformation and Innovation with a focus on faculty education perspectives and will be engaged in advancement of high priority clinical foci through recruitment and clinical activities.   

Reporting to the Physicians in Chief at both SHS and UHN, the  Department seeks an committed leader a commitment to excellence in clinical care, education, and mentorship while fostering a professional culture of inclusion, integrity, professionalism, civility, honesty and compassion. The successful candidate will have a personal record of educational excellence in academic accomplishment and leadership, or equivalent lived experience reflected in diversity and equity in education. They will have a strong track record in inter-professional collaboration with other health care disciplines and demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion in all aspects of their work upholding equity as a central component of high quality patient care. The qualified applicant will, or be eligible to, hold a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Medicine (or recognized international equivalent)  and/or one of its subspecialties and medical licensure in the province of Ontario.

The UHN-SHS Department of Medicine is the largest clinical department at both hospitals with over 350 Active Staff Physicians across 12 divisions. There are just under 100 Clinician Teachers and Clinician Educators (of which 5 are Lecturers, 53 are Assistant professors and 41 are Associate Professors). The two separate Physicians-in-Chief jointly lead the overall group with a combined Executive and Division Heads common to both sites. The PICs report dually to the leadership of their respective hospitals as well as the University Department of Medicine Chair. The Department provides high quality ambulatory and inpatient clinical care at multiple sites, and collaborates closely with all physicians who are part of the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine. The department has a long tradition of excellence in education and undergraduate medicine teaching, as well as comprehensive postgraduate teaching with over 200 Residents and almost 400 Fellows at present. UHN and SHS are situated on land that for thousands of years, has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and the Mississaugas of the Credit.

A leadership stipend will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
